I haven't seen all the outcomes yet, but in my experience, this game deals more with the church, than the magic itself. Also, several plot transitions which occured in my playthrough were illogical. My overall experience is positive, though. It's interesting, the choices are tough to make, a few characters were interesting etc.. Made bad choices and died :/ Would play again to hopefully not die.. Spoilers aheadThere were two major choices that my character made that weren't a result of MY decisions nor character stats.My character was the queen's wizard and was adored by her. The kingdom started to like him as well. My character was making big changes to the kingdom with advances in technology by making factories to produce weapons and advances in entertainment by teaching entertainers glamor and divination magic to keep the kingdom's people calm while at the brink of war.So, with that said, here's the turning point where it all goes south, my character receives a letter from his mom threatening him to come back home or she'll "throw away" "some of your things she found in the attic". Like yo, wtf. Why would my character give a flying ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥about some blank threat about some baby toys. I already made the decision in the past for my character that pretty much dismissed the parents because they coudln't accept the fact that he could use magic. So I had no ties with the parents. I also made the decision in the past to tell the church that Tal and Cos are shapeshifters, meaning that they're dead and my character casted a divination spell to confirm that. So again, I had no ties there either.Futhermore, the village gathered around my character's home at night during a point yelling "heretic", so my character actually had a great reason TO NOT go back to that village.So the first paragraph of the event of receiving that JOKE of a letter had me laughing so hard irl thinking that my character was laughing too. I thought that my character would completely dismiss the letter OR AT THE VERY LEAST give me the old school decisions AS A PLAYER to make. No. Instead this happens, this random letter shows up out of the blue:"You receive a letter from your mother asking you to return to Akriton to sort through some of your things she found in the attic. She threatens to throw them away if you don't come soon.Wondering what it is about your mother that compels her to threaten to throw out your things all the time, you agree to come with all haste."Just wth!!!! It blows my mind. I forced myself after that point to push through the game knowing that if I'd close it that I'd never reopen it. So I finished the game about 30 minutes later and had a tasteless unsatisfying ending which didn't help my relationship with the game. I could go way more into detail as why this game takes a PHAT dump on player choices such as having and naming your very own pet dragon that never did ANYTHING?!! EVER?!? But I'll cut it here.Remember, I LOVED this game until it showed those signs of betrayal.It just felt like the devs dumped a fat one right there and then.So buy and play this game at your own risk of having crap like that happen to you.. Basically the gameplay of Choice of Magics can be summed up in 4 simple steps:01 Situation X arises;02 Choose between magics A, B, and C for dealing with said situation;03 Situation dealt with; mastery of magic A/B/C increases!04 GOTO 01What about roleplay? Sorry I haven't seen any. Such a grave disappointment considering that this came from the same guy behind Choice of Robots. Go play that one instead if you haven't done so already.. Made bad choices and died :/ Would play again to hopefully not die.. Great text-based, interactive RPG.An original creative universe, with an original concept of magic and magical schools. The plot is interesting and you have many different choices about how to engage in it. Text-based, deep story RPGs in which your choices matter a lot are my favourite, I recommend it to every one who's not a lazy reader.It definitely deserves a sequel or even more.A little criticism: There is just a bit too much allusion to the modern life, which is sometimes humorous, but often kills the immersive atmosphere. I hope developers keep that in mind.
